Annual meeting of the Central Bank GS1 User Group

Banca d’Italia hosted the 2022 meeting of the Central Bank GS1 User Group. Representatives of ten NCBs and five GS1 Member Organisations (MO) met in Rome to discuss various topics related to GS1 Standards in cash logistics.

At the annual meeting on 27 June a wide variety of topics was discussed. The Secretary informed on a stocktaking on the use of GS1 Standards at NCBs. The results are published on this website. The Banque de France presented its new Notes-Held-To-Order and Coins-Held-To-Order schemes and explained how GS1 messages support the daily operations. The GS1 in Europe Cash Handling Group proposed a solution for GS1 identification of security seals. The US Federal Reserve gave an overview of its e-Manifest Readiness Program that enables banks, Cash-in-Transit companies and IT solution providers of the cash sector to connect to the US Federal Reserve branches by means of GS1 Standards. The National Bank of Kazakhstan has started an initiative to modernise its cash centres and conducts a feasibility study on the use of GS1 Standards in the cash cycle. Croatia will join the Euro in 2023 and the National Bank of Croatia has decided to connect to the Eurosystem’s application DECS (Data Exchange of Cash Services) by GS1 messages.

On 28 June the group`s NCB participants visited of Banca d’Italia’s cash centre in Frascati. The NCB representatives were informed about the successful use of GS1 Standards in the Italian cash cycle and Banca d’Italia’s internal cash processing. In the meeting after the visit the participants set the User Group’s work programme for the next year. This includes inter alia the ongoing search for a GS1 based solution on security seals and the setup of a GSMP (Global Standards Management Process) for recycling messages. The User Group agreed to initiate the coordination of an extension of the DECS messages with the ECB. Before closing the meeting the NCBs gave an overview on their work on CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency). It is envisaged that the next meeting of the group will take place in Germany in 2023.
